Ever since Game of Thrones generated enough gold for HBO to make a Lannister green with envy, other networks have been trying to replicate the formula. I’m struggling to come up with a single success story (MTV’s Shannara Chronicles isn’t), but Amazon seems likely to have made it with its The Lord of the Rings prequel. Unfortunately this show won’t come until next year. Until then we have the wheel of time (November 19th).

I’m not trying to upset any fans of the longtime book series – which was created by the late Robert Jordan and finally (after a couple of decades, 11 books, and the author’s death) finished by the one-man fantasy factory Brandon Sanderson – if I’m saying that its appeal is, uh, less universal than that of Game of Thrones. HBO carefully guided viewers into the overtly geekier aspects of this series (which itself is based on a series of very thick novels) by disguising the first few seasons in faux-historical political intrigue. But The Wheel of Time is firmly in Lord of the Rings territory when it comes to his fictional world, filled with real magic and monsters in ways that are not so easily questioned.

If it is hoping to appeal to nearly this broad audience, it has to be really good, with top-notch acting and production values ‚Äč‚Äčthat will convince people who are inclined to take a look at a plot plot full of made up words and apostrophes and click through . And although I’ve only read one of the novels myself and am therefore not an expert, my instinct (and the trailer) tell me that this show won’t be the next watercooler sensation. But maybe it’s good enough to get Amazon to keep adapting the saga’s many, many books.

Also on Prime Video this month is The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (November 5), a biopic starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Louis Wain, if you’ve never heard of him, is an artist whose work popularized owning cats as pets (as opposed to pest control) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. So he’s basically the patron saint of the internet, I say.

Here’s everything else coming to the streaming service this month, including the third season of Hanna (November 24th), a show I immediately forget every time I click the icon in my queue; and Always Jane (November 12), a new four-part documentary series about the life of a transgender teenager.
