Planning your laundry yard can be tricky, especially when space is limited in small homes.

Ms. Megan Zhang, director of the interior design studio M Atelier, gives tips on how to make optimal use of the washroom.

What should homeowners consider when planning the layout?

Avoid overcrowding the washroom. Imagine how much space is left after moving in. Also consider the area required for drying as it will take up a lot of space.

What are some creative ways to maximize laundry area use?

Consider building a wash bay for easy access to a watering hole for washing pugs and shoes, or hand washing clothes. You can do this by varying the floor height or adding a curb to keep the dry and wet areas separate.

Many homeowners choose to combine the service courtyard with the kitchen. When is this recommended?

This is not recommended if homeowners frequently air dry their laundry and cook a lot at the same time.

Cooking fat is likely to get trapped in the laundry and create an undesirable odor.

The garden and kitchen combination is better when the owners cook minimally or not at all and the air-drying laundry is not visible from the living room and dining room.

What are your tips for a well-organized laundry area for families with frequent or large loads of laundry?

Provide enough space for large loads of laundry to avoid overcrowding, especially for air drying clothes.

In addition to planning for the usual large items like the washing machine, dryer and laundry system, you should have plenty of storage space for items like the laundry basket, clothespins, detergent and even the ironing board.

What Should Home Owners Consider When Buying Laundry Equipment?

Take measurements at the actual location with the dimensions of the selected model to ensure that existing conditions such as water pipes or curbs are taken into account.

And if they want to stack the dryer over the washer, it may block natural light from the window, which is not optimal depending on the layout.
