McDonald’s opens a drive-through restaurant in Selly Oak Purchasing Park

Posted on March 3, 2021 by

McDonald’s has received planning permission to open a new drive-through restaurant in Selly Oak Shopping Park.

The new restaurant with 113 seats will open this year.

It will open in Unit 11 in the retail park and will take over the disused 4,5000 m² site.

Plans for the site include the “partial demolition of the rear of the unit” and of course changes to the pedestrian access and parking lot to create a thoroughfare around the building.

A statement filed on behalf of the applicant with the Birmingham City Council stated: “The company recently conducted a thorough review of its restaurant portfolio and sought to increase its representation in certain key locations.

“At the same time, McDonald’s has carried out a major brand refresh, both in terms of product range and the design and furnishings of its restaurants. This application is part of this overall strategy.

“The relevant planning guidelines at national and local levels have been reviewed and support the proposed development as a McDonald’s restaurant. Reusing the existing building with limited changes and including a thoroughfare is a good use of the land.”

The program is expected to create more than 65 jobs.

The Selly Oak Shopping Park opened in September 2018. It is just off the A38 and Harborne Lane, and adjacent to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

In addition to a huge Sainsbury’s, other stores include M & M & S Foodhall, Next, Superdrug and Wilco.

The new McDonald’s drive-thru will join other restaurants in the park, including Nando’s, Greggs, and Costa.

The chain’s drive-thru restaurants have remained open during the lockdown.

The 190,000 m² shopping park was opened as part of a project to renovate the 30 hectare Battery Park site in the region.

BirminghamLive previously reported how the fast food chain was waiting for the council to approve plans to open the park.
