A key advisory committee from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention meets Thursday to discuss booster shots of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine and whether people can mix and match the companies’ vaccines.

The meeting will take place one day after the Food and Drug Administration approves the booster of both vaccines, another important step in the distribution of additional doses. The FDA also approved mix-and-match vaccine doses.

The approval would open booster doses to the more than 15 million people vaccinated with J & J’s vaccine and the more than 69 million people who were fully vaccinated with Moderna’s vaccine.

If the committee issues a recommendation on Thursday and CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signs, additional vaccinations for these vaccines could be distributed to eligible individuals immediately.
