Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda French Gates, announced Monday that they are planning to divorce after 27 years of marriage.
“After much thought and work on our relationship, we made the decision to end our marriage,” said the two in a post on Twitter. “We raised three amazing children and built a foundation that works around the world to help everyone live healthy and productive lives.”
Of course, Bill Gates is one of the richest billionaires in the world. Wealth-X, a global intelligence and data company, estimates its net worth at least $ 134.1 billion.
Although his success began with Microsoft, his stake in the company now accounts for only 19.6% of its assets, which Wealth-X estimates at $ 26.1 billion. Much of his money is now tied up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but the exact amount has not been disclosed.
The Gates also co-founded the Giving Pledge with Warren Buffett, which calls on billionaires to give away more than half of their wealth to philanthropy.
Because of the foundation, the division of wealth between Bill and Melinda can be a lot more complicated. Court documents show they have a separation agreement, but the terms have not been made public.
But what do they work with? Here is a breakdown of Bill Gates’ wealth by Wealth-X.
Gates has a multi-million dollar real estate portfolio valued at over $ 166 million that Wealth-X found, including its 66,000-square-foot lakefront home in Medina, Washington. The estimated value of his stake in the property is $ 65 million.

Gates also owns a 30-acre estate in Wellington, Florida, valued at $ 55 million.
In California, Gates owns two other properties – in Del Mar he has an interest in a property valued at an estimated $ 20 million and in Indian Wells he owns a property valued at $ 1 million.
Gates also has a private island in Belize called Grand Bogue Caye, which Wealth-X estimates at $ 25 million.
Cars and art
According to Wealth-X, Gates’ collection of sports cars has an estimated value of $ 650,000, including a Porsche 911, a Jaguar XJ6, a Porsche Carrera Cabriolet 964, a 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe, and a Ferrari 348.
He also has an extensive art collection valued at an estimated $ 130 million, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Andrew Wyeth, and Winslow Homer.
Private holdings and common stocks
Gates largest asset is the holding company Cascade Investment, which he financed with stock sales and dividends from Microsoft. His stake in Cascade Investments is around $ 29.9 billion, according to Wealth-X, and accounts for 22.4% of its assets.
Through Cascade Investment, Gates owns billions of dollars in equity investments, including an estimated $ 11.9 billion in Deere & Company, $ 11 billion in Canadian National Railway, and $ 1.6 billion in Diageo, to name but a few to name a few.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust also reportedly owns stocks through Cascade Investment.
Of course, Gates also has stakes in Microsoft valued at an estimated $ 26.1 billion.
Over the years the Gates have given billions of dollars to their Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In a 2019 blog post, Gates wrote that the two transferred Microsoft shares valued at $ 20 billion to the Foundation and today, according to a tax return, have assets of more than $ 51 billion, CNBC reported.
