Do you love alternative shopping experiences? Would you like to know what a future with artificial intelligence would look like? This new shopping destination in Dubai will definitely interest you.

Carrefour City + has started in the Mall of the Emirates. It’s the first till-less store in the region with no checkouts, no queues, and no staff interaction. You access the store by downloading the MAF Carrefour app, getting what you are looking for, which is automatically added to your digital shopping cart, and paying automatically when you exit.

The store has snacks, beverages, packaged groceries, takeaway meals, and more available for purchase, and now you don’t have to search your wallet for crumpled notes. The store has been designed to provide a smoother shopping experience and the staff are available to answer questions or help customers find specific items.

Are you wondering how it works?

The store uses cameras powered by computer vision and machine learning to track customers’ movements in the store. (No face recognition or biometric data are recorded). Your individual account in the app and the cameras recognize when you pick up an item and the total amount is automatically charged to the card that you register in the app.

Currently, due to COVID security regulations, only ten people are allowed to enter at the same time. You need to generate a QR code to enter the store and when it is full the app will notify you and ask you to wait.

Earlier this year, Carrefour also announced there were robots on the shelves in the UAE. Read more here.
